Space | Project Based Learning
Students will explore space through hands-on STEM centers and a culminating project where they create a simple model of outer space using shapes, blocks, and recycled materials. Learners will observe, build, sort, count, and describe space objects while practicing collaboration and problem-solving.
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| space | The area beyond Earth where the sun, moon, stars, and planets are found. |
| star | A bright object in the sky. |
| moon | The round object that goes around Earth. |
| sun | The bright star that gives us light and warmth. |
| rocket | A vehicle that can travel into space. |
| orbit | The path something follows as it moves around another object. |
Show space pictures and ask simple questions: What do you see? What do you think is in space? Introduce the project: we will build our own space world.
Observe pictures, share ideas, and use words or gestures to identify space objects.
Read a short space book or show a picture walk. Pause to name the sun, moon, stars, and rocket. Model safe listening and pointing.
Listen, point to pictures, repeat new words, and answer simple questions.
Set up 3-4 rotating stations: 1) Build a rocket with blocks/tubes, 2) Sort stars/moons/planets by shape or size, 3) Count space objects with counters, 4) Make a moon surface with play dough or textured materials.
Rotate in small groups, explore materials, build, sort, count, and describe what they notice.
On chart paper, help the class decide what to include in the space world. Sketch a simple plan together.
Contribute ideas, choose materials, and help plan the class model.
Give children roles and support as they build on a large poster board or floor mat. Encourage teamwork and problem-solving.
Work together to place stars, rockets, moons, and planets; add labels or drawings with adult support.
Invite children to present the finished model. Ask them to describe what they built and what materials they used.
Share their part of the project, name space objects, and explain their choices.
Guide a quick clean-up and review the key vocabulary.
Help clean up and repeat vocabulary words.
Gather the class in a circle and celebrate the space world. Review: We learned about space, built rockets, counted stars, and worked together.
Teacher observation during stations and project work using a simple checklist for vocabulary use, participation, counting/sorting, and teamwork. Collect one photo or brief note for each child showing engagement and understanding.
Send home a simple space scavenger hunt: find one round object, one bright light at night, and one item shaped like a rocket or star. Children can draw or tell a family member what they found.
