Space | Guided Practice
Students will explore basic space concepts through hands-on, guided STEM activities. They will learn about the sun, moon, stars, rockets, and astronauts while practicing observation, counting, building, and sorting skills.
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Space | The place beyond Earth where the sun, moon, stars, and planets are. |
| Moon | The object we see in the sky at night that looks like a circle or crescent. |
| Star | A bright object in space that shines in the night sky. |
| Rocket | A vehicle that travels into space. |
| Astronaut | A person who travels into space. |
Show a space picture card or short video. Ask simple questions: 'What do you see?' 'Have you looked at the moon?' Introduce the lesson topic.
Look, listen, and share observations using words, gestures, or pointing.
Read a space-themed book or discuss picture cards. Pause to name objects and repeat vocabulary words.
Repeat vocabulary, point to pictures, and answer simple questions.
Model how to build a simple rocket using tubes, blocks, or paper shapes. Support children as they build and decorate their own rockets.
Build a rocket with guidance, decorate it, and describe what they made.
Place star, moon, and planet-like objects in a center. Model sorting by color or shape and counting out loud.
Sort objects into groups and count each group with help.
Lead simple movements: march like astronauts, stretch to the stars, and pretend to float in space.
Move safely, follow directions, and imitate astronaut motions.
Rotate students through two or three simple stations: drawing space scenes, building with blocks, and matching picture cards.
Complete each station with support and practice using space vocabulary.
Invite children to show their rocket or drawing and say one thing they learned about space.
Share work, listen to peers, and use one or two vocabulary words.
Review the key words: space, moon, star, rocket, and astronaut. Ask students to name their favorite space object and tell one thing they learned.
Teacher observation checklist during activities: identifies space objects, uses vocabulary, participates in sorting/counting, and completes a simple rocket build or drawing.
Send home a simple space hunt sheet: students look for the moon or stars at night with an adult and draw one thing they saw.
