Matter | Guided Practice
Students will explore matter through hands-on observation, sorting, and simple experiments with familiar objects. They will use their senses to notice that matter has properties such as size, shape, color, texture, and whether it is a solid or liquid.
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| matter | Anything that takes up space. |
| solid | Matter that keeps its own shape. |
| liquid | Matter that flows and takes the shape of its container. |
| observe | To look closely and notice details. |
| property | A way to describe something, such as its color, shape, or texture. |
Show a few familiar objects one at a time. Ask, “What do you notice? Can you describe it?” Model simple descriptive language and record student ideas on chart paper.
Look closely, name what they see, and describe objects using simple words.
Explain that matter is anything that takes up space. Hold up an object and ask students to gesture “yes” if they think it is matter. Emphasize that everything they touch and use in the room is matter.
Respond with gestures, repeat the word matter, and point to classroom examples.
Place mixed objects in the center. Guide children to sort them by one property at a time, such as color, size, or texture. Model how to say, “I notice…” and “I think this goes here because…”
Work with the teacher to sort objects, compare items, and explain choices with support.
Invite students to feel and move selected objects, then pour water between two clear containers. Ask guiding questions: “Does this keep its shape?” “What happens when we pour it?” Reinforce the idea that solids keep their shape and liquids flow.
Manipulate objects, observe water, and answer questions about what they notice.
Pair students and prompt them to share one thing they learned about matter and one object they observed. Support with sentence frames: “I noticed…” and “It is a…”
Turn and talk using sentence frames or single words as needed.
Hold up items or pictures. Ask students to show thumbs up if it is matter and hands on head if they are unsure. Clarify any confusion and restate key ideas.
Respond to prompts, listen, and repeat key vocabulary.
Gather students and review: matter is anything that takes up space, solids keep their shape, and liquids flow. Invite children to name one object they explored and one property they noticed.
