Story Elements | Independent Practice
In this 30-minute independent practice lesson, Pre-K students use pictures, oral language, and simple letter/word matching to identify basic story elements: characters, setting, and events. Students work mostly on their own with teacher support available as needed. The activity is designed to be challenging while still developmentally appropriate.
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Character | A person or animal in a story. |
| Setting | Where and when a story happens. |
| Event | Something that happens in the story. |
| Sort | To put things into groups that go together. |
| Match | To find two things that belong together. |
Show a familiar story and briefly review the three story elements using picture cards: character, setting, event. Model one example for each.
Listen, name pictures aloud, and point to the correct category when prompted.
Give each student a set of mixed picture cards and sorting mats. Explain that students will sort the cards by story element. Circulate quietly and support students who need help.
Independently place each picture card on the correct mat. Say the story element name aloud when possible.
Invite students to complete a second task: match picture cards to simple labels, beginning sounds, or partner cards. For students ready for more, ask them to choose one card and tell a short story sentence about it.
Match cards, trace or point to labels, and explain choices using simple language or sentence frames.
Ask a few students to show one card from each category and briefly explain why it belongs there. Restate the three story elements.
Share one sorted card and listen to classmates.
Bring students together and review the three story elements one last time. Ask them to point to a character, setting, and event card. Celebrate effort and remind them that stories are made of people, places, and things that happen.
