Solar System | Centers
Students will explore the solar system through hands-on centers that introduce the Sun, Moon, and planets in a simple, age-appropriate way. Children will sort, match, build, draw, and move as they learn that Earth is one planet in a larger solar system.
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Sun | A big star that gives us light and warmth. |
| Planet | A round object in space that goes around the Sun. |
| Earth | The planet we live on. |
| Moon | A round object that goes around Earth. |
| Solar system | The Sun and everything that goes around it. |
Show a picture of the Sun and ask, 'What do we see in the sky?' Introduce the words Sun, planet, Earth, and moon using simple pictures.
Look, listen, repeat vocabulary, and share any prior knowledge.
Place picture cards and a simple solar system poster at the center. Model matching the same pictures and naming the Sun, Earth, and Moon.
Match cards to pictures and say the names with support.
Provide cutouts, stickers, or play dough balls. Show children how to make a Sun in the center and place planets around it.
Build a simple model and practice placing objects in order around the Sun.
Offer a tray with assorted circles, colors, or planet pictures. Invite children to sort by color or size and count the pieces together.
Sort, count, and describe objects using simple language such as big, small, and same.
Use music or a drum beat. Model walking in a circle around a 'Sun' spot on the floor and explain that planets go around the Sun.
Move safely in a circle and pretend to orbit the Sun.
Gather students and ask a few children to show one center product or name one thing they learned.
Share work, repeat vocabulary, and listen to peers.
Review the solar system words together and remind children that Earth is our home planet and the Sun helps give us light and warmth.
Teacher observes children during centers using a simple checklist for vocabulary recognition, matching, sorting, and participation in movement. Collect one center product or photo as evidence of learning.
