Plants | Mini Lesson
In this mini lesson, Pre-K students explore how robots can help people care for plants. Children will observe plant needs, act out simple robot movements, and practice sequencing by “programming” a pretend robot to water, check, and move toward plants.
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| robot | A machine that helps people do jobs. |
| plant | A living thing that grows and needs care. |
| water | What plants drink to stay healthy. |
| sunlight | Light from the sun that helps plants grow. |
| care | Helping something stay healthy and safe. |
Show a toy robot or robot picture. Say, “Today our robot is going to help a plant!” Ask, “What do plants need?” Point to a plant or picture.
Look, listen, and share ideas about what plants need.
Introduce vocabulary with gestures and pictures: robot, plant, water, sunlight, care. Briefly explain that robots can help people do jobs, like moving to a plant or bringing water.
Repeat key words, point to pictures, and answer simple questions.
Place a plant or plant picture on the floor/table. Use tape or blocks to show a path. Model a simple robot sequence: “Go to plant. Stop. Water plant.” Use clear step-by-step language.
Watch the demo and say the steps with the teacher.
Invite children to help “program” the robot using 2-step directions. Example: “Move to the plant, then give water.” Let children point to the next action card or act out robot moves with arms.
Take turns giving or acting out one simple step, following the sequence with support.
In small groups, children draw or trace a robot helping a plant, or walk a pretend robot path to the plant and say what the robot does. Prompt with questions: “What does the plant need?” “What does the robot do first?”
Create, move, and speak using vocabulary words and simple sequences.
Bring the group back together. Review: “Plants need water and sunlight. Robots can help care for plants.” Invite 2 or 3 children to share their robot idea.
Share one thing they learned or show their picture/action.
End with a simple chant: “Plants need water, plants need sun, robots help and learning is fun!” Show the plant again and ask children to wave their robot arms.
Teacher observes children during discussion and activities for understanding of plant needs, use of vocabulary, and ability to follow a simple sequence. Use the checklist in the Checks section to note participation and understanding.
