Weather | Small Group
In this small-group Pre-K lesson, children explore different kinds of weather through movement, observation, and simple hands-on activities. Students will name common weather types, connect weather to how they feel and what they wear, and notice that weather can change.
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| weather | What the sky and air are like outside. |
| sunny | Bright with sunshine. |
| rainy | When rain falls from clouds. |
| cloudy | When the sky has many clouds. |
| windy | When moving air can be felt or heard. |
Show weather picture cards one at a time. Ask, 'What do you see?' and model simple responses such as 'sunny' or 'rainy.'
Say the weather word, point to the picture, and repeat the word with the teacher.
Call out a weather type and act it out with the group: sun (arms overhead), rain (finger wiggles), wind (sway side to side), clouds (make a circle with arms).
Copy the motions and say the weather word aloud.
Place toy clothing items in the center. Hold up a weather card and ask children to choose what they might wear for that weather. Support choices with simple prompts.
Pick an item, name it if possible, and match it to the weather card.
Invite children to sort a few weather cards into a basket or onto chart paper by type. Ask, 'Which one matches the rain? Which one shows the sun?'
Help sort cards and answer simple questions about each picture.
Give each child paper and crayons. Ask them to draw one kind of weather they liked best.
Draw or color a weather scene and share it with the group if time allows.
Review the weather words and ask children to name one weather type and one clothing choice.
Repeat the words and share one thing they learned.
Gather the group and review the weather words one last time. Let each child point to a card and say one word, then end with a simple chant: 'Sunny, rainy, windy, cloudy—weather all around us!'
