Animals | Guided Practice
Students will practice basic movement skills by pretending to move like different animals. The lesson builds listening skills, body control, and gross motor coordination through simple guided practice activities.
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Animal movement | Moving your body like an animal. |
| Freeze | Stop your body and hold still. |
| Space | The area where you move safely without bumping others. |
Gather students in an open space. Model simple stretches and ask children to walk around the space safely.
Copy the teacher’s movements and practice walking without touching others.
Call out or show an animal card one at a time. Demonstrate each movement, then guide students to copy it. Use simple animals such as bunny hops, bear crawls, frog jumps, duck waddle, and cat stretch. Remind students to freeze when prompted.
Imitate each animal movement with teacher support and stop when told to freeze.
Say an animal name and have students move for a short burst, then freeze. Give praise for safe movement and listening.
Respond quickly to directions and practice starting and stopping on cue.
Bring students together, ask which animal they liked best, and review safe moving and freezing.
Share one favorite animal and listen to the review.
End by praising effort and safe movement. Have students take one deep breath, freeze like a statue, and name their favorite animal movement.
At home, have the child show a family member one animal movement and name the animal.
