Look at the picture, name what they see, and repeat the phrase 'It is about __.'
Explain that the main idea is what something is mostly about. Use a chart with one picture and 2-3 details. Say the main idea first, then point to details that help explain it.
Listen, point to details, and repeat the main idea with the teacher.
Place 3 picture cards on the floor or chart. For each card, ask students to choose the picture's main idea from two simple choices. Support with prompts like 'Look at all the parts. What is it mostly about?'
Choose the best answer, say the main idea aloud, and explain with one or two words.
Act out a simple scene such as eating, sleeping, or playing. Ask students to name the main idea of the action. Repeat with a few examples.
Watch, guess, and say the main idea using one short phrase.
Read a very short familiar book or a few pages from a picture book. Pause and ask, 'What is this page mostly about?' Model answers and point to pictures for support.
Answer with words, gestures, or pointing to show understanding.
