Inference | Small Group
In this small-group Pre-K lesson, children practice using picture clues to make simple inferences. They will look carefully, think about what they see, and say what might be happening using oral language and sentence frames.
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| clue | Something that helps us figure out what is happening. |
| infer | To use clues to make a good guess. |
| picture | An image that shows people, places, or things. |
| think | To use your brain to figure something out. |
Show one picture and ask, 'What do you see?' Point to details and model simple noticing words.
Say what they notice in the picture using words, gestures, or short phrases.
Explain: 'We use clues to make a guess about what is happening.' Model with a picture: 'I see a child with an umbrella. I think it is raining.'
Listen and repeat the sentence frame: 'I see... I think...'
Show 2-3 picture cards one at a time. Ask simple questions like, 'What do you see?' 'What do you think is happening?' Support answers with sentence frames.
Point, name details, and make simple guesses about each picture with teacher support.
Use a puppet or brief action, such as pretending to hold a spoon and sit at a table. Ask, 'What clues did you see?' 'What do you think I'm doing?'
Say the clues and make a guess about the action or situation.
Invite each child to share one picture clue and one guess. Restate and celebrate responses.
Share one simple inference using the frame, 'I see... I think...'
End by saying, 'Good readers and thinkers use clues to figure things out.' Review the words clue and infer, and let children repeat them once more.
Send home a simple picture prompt for children to discuss with a family member using the sentence frame 'I see... I think...'
