Context Clues | Review Lesson
Students review how to use context clues to understand unfamiliar words in read-alouds, pictures, and short spoken sentences. The lesson is highly interactive, with modeling, guided practice, movement, and partner games appropriate for Pre-K learners.
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| context clues | Hints around a word that help us figure out what it means |
| clue | Something that helps us find an answer |
| guess | A smart try when we are not sure |
| word meaning | What a word means |
Introduce a detective puppet or hat. Say that good readers look for clues to solve word mysteries. Model finding a clue in the classroom, such as a picture or object, and ask, 'What can we figure out from this clue?'
Name visible clues in the room and practice saying, 'I see a clue!'
Read a short picture book aloud. Pause at 3 to 5 target words. Think aloud using simple language: point to pictures, repeat key words, and model how nearby words help. Example: 'It says the caterpillar was tiny. The picture shows a very small caterpillar. Tiny means small.'
Listen, point to pictures, and repeat the target word and guessed meaning with the teacher.
Show simple sentence strips with pictures. Read each sentence and ask students to help solve the mystery word. Guide them to use the picture and surrounding words. Offer choices when needed.
Chorus the answer, point to clues, and respond with sentence frames such as 'I think it means...'
Hide picture cards or objects around the room. Call out a clue word or describe a clue. Students find the matching picture or object and return to the carpet.
Move safely, search for matching clues, and name the object or picture they found.
Place 4 to 6 word cards in a pocket chart with matching pictures. Partners take turns choosing a card, saying the word, and using the picture and nearby words to explain the meaning. Support with prompts as needed.
Work with a partner to match cards, talk about clues, and explain their thinking with help.
Pull a small group for extra review. Use very short oral sentences and picture choices. Check for understanding by asking students to point to the best clue.
Respond by pointing, naming, or choosing between two options.
Review the key idea: context clues help us figure out word meaning. Ask volunteers to share one clue they used today. Celebrate effort and detective thinking.
Share one clue or repeat the sentence frame, 'I used the picture' or 'I used the words around it.'
End with a quick choral review: 'Context clues help us figure out new words!' Have students give a thumbs-up and name one clue they used today.
