Multiplication | Centers
Students will rotate through simple centers to hear, say, and act out the idea of putting groups together using a foreign language. This lesson introduces early multiplication concepts as repeated groups, using pictures, counting, movement, and oral language in a developmentally appropriate way for Pre-K.
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| group | a small set of things together |
| same | matching or equal |
| count | say numbers in order |
| more | a larger amount |
| repeat | to do or say again |
Show 2 small groups of objects. Say the foreign language number word with the class, then count each group together. Model: 'two groups' and point to each set.
Watch, repeat the number word, and count with the teacher using fingers or objects.
Place picture cards and loose counters at the table. Ask students to match the correct number of objects to each card and say the foreign language number word with support.
Match objects to cards, count the group, and repeat the number word.
Lead a movement center where students clap, jump, or tap in small repeated sets. Say the foreign language number word before each set.
Copy the movement and repeat the number word for each group.
Invite students to build two or three equal groups with blocks or play dough balls. Ask, 'How many in each group?' and model the answer.
Build simple repeated groups, count each set, and answer with help.
Read simple picture cards aloud, pausing for students to point to the correct group size or number card.
Listen, point, and choose the matching card or picture.
Bring the class together and review the idea of groups. Celebrate correct counting and pronunciation.
Show one center product, say one foreign language number word, and help review the concept.
Review that multiplication means making equal groups. In a simple, age-appropriate way, reinforce that students built and counted groups while practicing foreign language number words.
Teacher observation during centers using a simple checklist: matches groups correctly, counts with support, repeats foreign language number words, and participates in repeated-group activities.
