Story Elements | Independent Practice
Students will practice identifying key story elements—characters, setting, and what happens first, next, and last—through hands-on independent practice with teacher check-ins. The lesson is designed for Pre-K learners and uses pictures, oral language, sorting, and simple drawing/writing to support comprehension.
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| character | A person, animal, or thing in a story. |
| setting | Where and when the story happens. |
| beginning | The first part of the story. |
| next | What happens after the beginning. |
| last | The final part of the story. |
Show the book cover and ask simple questions: Who might be in this story? Where might it happen? Introduce character and setting with pictures.
Predict the story using words or pointing to pictures.
Read the story aloud with pauses to name characters, setting, and major events. Model thinking aloud: 'I see the character... I know the setting because...'
Listen, repeat key words, and answer quick oral questions.
Place picture cards on the table or board. Model sorting one card at a time into character, setting, or event. Then invite students to help sort a few examples.
Help sort cards and say why each card belongs in a group.
Give each student a worksheet with three sections: character, setting, and first/next/last. Circulate, prompt with questions, and provide verbal support without completing the task for them.
Independently match, glue, draw, or circle pictures that show story elements and sequence.
Invite students to share their work with a partner or the teacher using sentence frames: 'The character is...' 'The setting is...' 'First...'
Show their work and retell the story using the vocabulary.
Review the lesson key words and collect worksheets. Use a brief checklist to note each student's ability to identify characters, setting, and sequence.
Respond to final questions and clean up materials.
End with a quick whole-group review: 'Who was in the story?' 'Where did it happen?' 'What happened first?' Praise effort and accurate use of story words.
Collect the independent practice page and use a simple teacher checklist during work time to assess each student's ability to identify characters, setting, and story sequence.
