Character Analysis | Review Lesson
Students review how to analyze a character by noticing what the character does, feels, and says. Using simple coding cards and a story character, students practice identifying character traits and then code a short sequence that matches the character’s actions or feelings.
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| character | A person or animal in a story. |
| feelings | How a character feels, like happy, sad, or mad. |
| action | Something a character does. |
| code | A step or direction we use to show what happens next. |
| sequence | The order of events: first, next, last. |
Show the story character and ask, “How does our character feel?” Model one feeling word and one action word.
Name a feeling or action using one-word or short-phrase responses.
Read or retell a very short story moment. Ask guiding questions: “What did the character do?” “How did the character feel?” “What clue tells you that?”
Point to emotion cards, answer with words, and repeat the character’s action.
Place 3 floor cards in order: first, next, last. Model a simple code path or movement that matches the character’s story action or feeling. Think aloud: “First the character is sad, next the character asks for help, last the character smiles.”
Follow the code path with fingers, body movements, or a toy character; say first/next/last with the teacher.
Give a new prompt: “Show me a code for a happy character” or “What code comes next?” Support children in choosing the correct card or movement.
Choose a card, act it out, or place a card in sequence with help if needed.
Ask each child to show a thumbs response or point to the correct emotion card for the character.
Complete the quick check and listen for the closing message.
Review: “We can analyze a character by noticing what they do and how they feel. We can code the story in order: first, next, last.” Have students repeat the sequence words together.
Teacher observation during the review and coding activity. Use the exit check to note whether each student can identify a character feeling and follow a simple first-next-last code sequence.
