Space | Assessment Review
Students review basic living things through an age-appropriate space theme. They sort pictures, name body parts and needs of living things, and show what they know in short teacher-led checks for understanding.
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| living | Something that grows and needs food, water, and air. |
| nonliving | Something that does not grow and does not need food, water, or air. |
| animal | A living thing that can move and needs care. |
| plant | A living thing that grows and needs water, light, and care. |
| space | The big area beyond Earth where the sun, moon, and stars are. |
| sun | A star that gives us light and warmth. |
| moon | The round object we see in the sky at night. |
| star | A bright object in the sky far away from Earth. |
Show a space image or hold up the book cover. Ask simple review questions: 'What do you see?' 'Is it day or night?' 'What is bright in the sky?'
Say what they notice, point to pictures, and answer using one-word or short responses.
Model sorting picture cards into living and nonliving groups. Reinforce that plants and animals are living things, while the sun, moon, and stars are not living.
Watch, repeat key words, and help place cards into the correct groups.
Give each small group picture cards. Ask students to sort them and name each card. Prompt with questions such as 'Does it grow?' and 'Does it need water?'
Sort pictures, say the names, and answer simple yes/no questions.
Individually or in pairs, have students match pictures to words or teacher prompts. Ask each child to point to living/nonliving items and name one thing a living thing needs.
Match, point, and speak to show understanding during the assessment check.
Ask students to draw one living thing and one space object in the same picture. Circulate and ask each child to explain their drawing.
Draw and briefly describe their picture using vocabulary words.
Review the big idea: living things grow and need care; space has the sun, moon, and stars. Praise effort and effortful answering.
Repeat key facts and share one thing they learned.
End with a quick recap chant: 'Living things grow and need care. Sun, moon, and stars are in space up there!'
Teacher uses a simple checklist during the match-and-tell activity to record each student's ability to sort living and nonliving things, identify space objects, and name one need of living things.
