Story Elements | Whole Class
Students will learn to identify the basic parts of a story: characters, setting, and events. Through discussion, sorting, drawing, and shared writing, they will practice using story elements to tell a simple story.
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| character | A person or animal in the story. |
| setting | Where and when the story happens. |
| event | Something that happens in the story. |
| retell | To tell the story again in order. |
Show the book cover and ask, 'Who do you think this story is about?' Introduce the words character, setting, and event.
Look at the cover, share ideas, and repeat the new vocabulary.
Read a short picture book aloud. Pause to point out the character, setting, and important events using simple questions.
Listen, answer questions, and identify story elements with teacher support.
Draw three boxes on chart paper labeled Character, Setting, and Event. Fill in the boxes with the class using ideas from the story.
Help name the story elements and suggest words or ideas for each box.
Show picture cards or simple story examples. Ask students to help sort each card into character, setting, or event.
Take turns naming the correct story element and explaining why.
Ask students to draw one character, one setting, or one event from the story on paper and label it with help as needed.
Draw and try to label their picture, then share with the class or a partner.
Review the three story elements and ask, 'Who was in the story? Where did it happen? What happened?'
Chorus the answers and point to the correct vocabulary words on the chart.
End by saying the three story elements together: character, setting, and event. Invite students to repeat them and give one example from the story.
