Greet students, explain that today they will listen to a story and show understanding by retelling, drawing, and labeling. Review expected routines for sitting, listening, and sharing ideas.
Listen, sit in a circle or at desks, and repeat expectations aloud.
Introduce character, setting, beginning, middle, end, and retell using simple examples and gestures. Point to pictures or the book cover if available.
Repeat words, point to the cover, and practice using the words with partner talk.
Read the story aloud with expression. Pause briefly to ask simple questions: Who is in the story? Where are they? What do you notice?
Listen, answer questions, and use the pictures to support thinking.
Use a simple beginning-middle-end chart. Ask students to help recall events in order. Write or draw student ideas on the chart.
Share ideas orally, sequence events, and help build the class chart.
Model drawing one story event and labeling it with a simple word or sentence frame such as 'I see ___.' Then guide students to choose a favorite story part to draw and label.
Draw a favorite part, attempt labels with invented spelling, and copy or complete a simple sentence frame.
Pair students and prompt them to tell their partner the beginning, middle, or end of the story using the chart.
Turn and talk, listening to a partner and sharing one or two events in order.
Circulate, support students with pencil grip, writing prompts, and story recall. Offer sentence starters and word cards as needed.
Finish drawings, add labels, and practice retelling the story quietly or to the teacher.
Invite a few volunteers to share their work. Review the vocabulary and ask students to show with thumbs up if they can retell the story in order.
Share work, respond to review questions, and clean up materials.
End by reviewing the class chart and vocabulary. Have students pack up after one final quick retell: 'First..., next..., last...'.
