Matter | Project Based Learning
Students will explore matter through hands-on investigations with solids, liquids, and a simple making activity. They will observe, sort, compare, and build a class project showing that matter can be different shapes, sizes, and textures. The lesson is designed for a full 90-minute project-based learning experience.
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| matter | Anything that takes up space and has weight. |
| solid | A kind of matter that keeps its own shape. |
| liquid | A kind of matter that can pour and take the shape of its container. |
| observe | To look closely and notice details. |
| property | A word that tells about what something is like. |
Show a few classroom objects and ask, 'What do you notice?' Introduce the word matter in simple terms: things all around us that take up space.
Share ideas, name familiar objects, and listen to the new word.
Read a short teacher-made or picture book introduction about solids and liquids. Pause to model simple observation words like hard, soft, wet, and smooth.
Point, repeat key words, and answer yes/no or either/or questions.
Place objects on tables. Model sorting items into Solid and Liquid groups. Guide children to touch, look, and sort with support.
Work in small groups to sort objects, compare choices, and say why an item belongs in a group.
Give each child or pair a paper section to create a class collage/poster titled 'Matter Around Us.' Children glue pictures or draw solids and liquids and add labels with help.
Draw, glue, decorate, and contribute to the class project.
Gather students around the finished project. Ask guiding questions: 'Which items are solids? Which are liquids? What words describe them?'
Share one object they added and describe it using one property word.
Lead clean up and review the key idea that matter is all around us.
Help clean up and repeat the lesson takeaway.
Revisit the project and say together: 'Matter is all around us. Solids keep their shape. Liquids can pour.'
At home, help your child find three examples of matter: one solid, one liquid, and one item that feels soft or hard. Draw or tell someone about the three items.
