Theme | Project Based Learning
Students explore a theme through pictures, oral language, and shared writing to learn and spell related high-frequency words. They work together to sort, say, build, and write theme words, then create a class book or poster showing the theme with labeled spelling words.
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| theme | The big idea or topic that connects the words and pictures. |
| spell | To say or write the letters in a word in the correct order. |
| word | A group of letters that names something or tells an idea. |
| picture clue | A picture that helps us figure out a word. |
| sort | To put things into groups that belong together. |

Show the book, song, or pictures and talk about the topic. Name the theme clearly and model 3-4 theme words orally.
Repeat the theme, point to pictures, and say the words aloud with the teacher.
Read aloud or play the theme song. Pause to notice key words and ask students to find and repeat theme words.
Listen, join in on repeated words, and act out or point to matching pictures.
Model sorting word cards and picture cards into theme groups. Emphasize first sounds and matching pictures to words.
Work with partners or small groups to sort cards and explain why items belong together.
Choose 4-6 key theme words. Model saying each word slowly, counting sounds, and building it with letter tiles or cards.
Build each word, trace it in the air or on paper, and say each letter as they spell it aloud.
Guide students to create one page each for a class book or one section each for a poster. Write or help students write a theme word and draw a matching picture.
Illustrate, label, and contribute one word or page to the shared project.
Invite students to present their page or point to a word on the poster. Review the theme words together.
Share their work, read or recite theme words, and celebrate the class project.
Gather the class and review the finished book or poster. Point to each word, read it aloud together, and restate the theme in one simple sentence.
