Government | Mini Lesson
Students will learn that government is a group of leaders and helpers who make rules, keep people safe, and help communities work together. This lesson uses simple examples from school and home to connect the idea of government to children's daily lives.
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| government | People who make rules and help keep a community safe and fair. |
| rule | An instruction we follow to stay safe and work together. |
| leader | A person who helps guide others and make decisions. |
| community | A group of people who live, work, and play in the same place. |
Show a picture of a classroom or neighborhood. Say: 'Who helps us follow rules and stay safe?' Guide students to share ideas.
Students think, turn and talk, and share simple ideas about helpers and rules.
Explain in very simple terms: 'Government is a group of leaders who make rules and help people stay safe.' Point to pictures of a mayor, police officer, and firefighter. Connect to school rules: 'Our school has rules too.'
Students listen, point to pictures, and repeat key words: government, rule, leader.
Hold up one picture at a time and ask: 'How does this person help us?' Then ask students to sort each picture into 'helps us' or 'not a helper' with a quick thumbs-up response.
Students answer with one word or short phrases and give thumbs-up when they think the picture shows a helper.
Ask students to draw one line or make one quick picture of a rule at school or home, such as 'walk' or 'share.'
Students draw a simple rule and show it to a partner or the class.
Repeat the main idea: 'Government helps make rules and keep people safe.'
Students chorally repeat the sentence.
End by saying: 'Government helps people by making rules and keeping us safe.' Have students repeat the sentence once together.
Teacher observes students during discussion and activity to check whether they can say or show one way government helps the community and identify a simple rule or helper.
Draw one community helper or one rule that helps people stay safe. Bring the drawing to share the next day.
