American Revolution | Standard Lesson
Students learn that the American Revolution was a time when people in America wanted fair rules and worked together to change how they were governed. The lesson uses simple language, visuals, and movement to help kindergarten students understand the idea of change, choice, and community.
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| rule | A direction people follow to stay safe and fair. |
| fair | Equal and right for everyone. |
| colonists | People who lived in America a long time ago before it became the United States. |
| king | A ruler in charge of a country. |
| change | To make something different. |
| teamwork | Working together to do something. |
Show a simple classroom rule card and ask, 'Why do we have rules?' Explain that people long ago also had rules, and sometimes they wanted the rules to be fair.
Students share quick examples of classroom rules and listen for the idea of fairness.
Use pictures to tell a simple story: a king made many rules for people in America, and many colonists wanted different, fairer rules. Introduce the idea that people worked together and that this time was called the American Revolution.
Students point to pictures, repeat key words, and answer yes/no questions.
Read short statements and have students show thumbs up for fair or hands on head for not fair. Example: 'Everyone gets a turn.' 'One person gets everything.' Connect the activity to how people felt about rules long ago.
Students respond with movements and practice using the words fair and rule.
Ask, 'What can people do when they do not think something is fair?' Guide students to answer that people can talk, share ideas, and work together. Explain that during the American Revolution, many people joined together to make change.
Students turn and talk with a partner, then share one idea with the class.
Ask students to draw one picture of people working together or a symbol from the lesson, such as a flag, a group, or a rule sign. Invite a few volunteers to explain their drawing.
Students draw and briefly describe their work using vocabulary words.
Review the lesson with three quick prompts: 'What is fair?' 'Who were the colonists?' and 'What did people do together?' End by saying that the American Revolution was a time when people worked together for change.
Ask students to draw a picture of a fair rule at home or school and tell a family member why rules help people work together. Bring the picture back to share.
