Solar System | Guided Practice
Students will explore the solar system through simple discussion, pictures, movement, and a hands-on craft. The lesson focuses on identifying the Sun and the planets as part of our solar system in a developmentally appropriate way.
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Sun | A star that gives us light and heat. |
| Planet | A round object that moves around the Sun. |
| Solar System | The Sun and the planets that travel around it. |
| Earth | Our planet. |
| Orbit | The path a planet follows around the Sun. |
Show a picture of the solar system. Say, 'Today we will learn about our solar system.' Point to the Sun and ask simple questions like, 'What do you notice?'
Listen, look at the picture, and share observations using simple words.
Explain that the Sun is in the center and the planets move around it. Introduce the words Sun, planet, Earth, and solar system using gestures and pictures.
Repeat vocabulary, point to pictures, and answer yes/no or choice questions.
Place planet cards and the Sun card on the board. Guide students to help sort the Sun from the planets and identify Earth.
Come up one at a time to place or point to the correct card with teacher support.
Stand in the center as the Sun. Invite students to walk slowly in a circle around you to show orbiting. Use simple directions like 'Walk around the Sun.'
Move safely in a circle, practicing the idea of orbit while repeating key words.
Give each student a Sun circle and simple planet circles to glue onto a paper strip or circle path. Model where to place the Sun and planets.
Glue pieces in place with guidance, using crayons to color planets if time allows.
Ask students to point to their Sun and one planet. Review: 'The Sun is a star. Planets move around the Sun. Earth is our planet.'
Show their work, repeat key facts, and answer teacher prompts.
Lead clean up, then gather students for a quick closing chant or review.
Help clean up and participate in the closing review.
End with a short chant: 'Sun in the middle, planets go around, that is our solar system!' Ask students to point to the Sun one last time and say one thing they learned.
