Matter | Review Lesson
Students review the idea that matter is anything that has mass and takes up space through hands-on observation, sorting, and class discussion. The lesson uses familiar classroom objects so children can connect the concept to real life.
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| matter | Anything that has mass and takes up space. |
| solid | A thing that keeps its own shape, like a block or crayon. |
| liquid | A thing that can pour and takes the shape of its container, like water. |
| gas | A thing we cannot always see, like air. |
Hold up a familiar object and ask, 'What do you know about this?' Guide students to notice that it is real, can be touched, and takes up space. Introduce the word matter.
Students share ideas, point, and name what they notice about the object.
Show 4 to 5 objects or picture cards one at a time. For each item, ask students to give a thumbs up if it is matter. Reinforce that all real objects and materials are matter.
Students respond with thumbs up/down and explain with simple words such as 'It is real' or 'It takes up space.'
Place three labels on the board: solid, liquid, gas. Show examples and model sorting each item into the correct group. Keep the focus on review, not new instruction.
Students help place objects or pictures under the correct label and repeat the vocabulary with the teacher.
Ask partners to finish the sentence: 'Matter is...' and 'A solid is...' Circulate and listen for correct use of vocabulary.
Students turn and talk using simple sentence frames.
Ask each student to point to one item in the room that is matter or draw one matter example on paper if needed. Collect responses or observe answers.
Students identify or draw one example of matter.
Review by saying together: 'Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space.' Ask students to name one solid, one liquid, or one gas before ending the lesson.
Formative assessment through observation, sorting participation, partner responses, and the exit check showing whether students can identify an example of matter.
