Vocabulary | Whole Class
In this 15-minute whole-class lesson, students will learn and use a small set of high-utility vocabulary words through pictures, movement, oral practice, and quick application in sentences. The lesson is designed for advanced Kindergarten learners and focuses on listening, speaking, and word meaning.
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| curious | wanting to know more about something |
| giggle | a light, happy laugh |
| careful | using attention so you do not make a mistake or get hurt |
Show a picture or act out a quick scene. Say, 'Listen for a new word.' Model one sentence using a target word.
Listen, watch, and repeat the word with the teacher.
Introduce each vocabulary word one at a time. Say the word, define it in kid-friendly language, show the picture, and give a short example sentence. Ask a quick yes/no or choice question after each word.
Repeat the word, point to the matching picture, and answer the teacher's question.
Say a sentence and have students show the meaning with a gesture. Example: 'I am curious about the closed box.' Ask students to act out 'curious,' 'giggle,' or 'careful' when they hear each word.
Move, gesture, and say the word aloud when prompted.
Invite students to turn and tell a partner a simple sentence using one vocabulary word. Model a sentence frame such as 'I feel curious when ___.'.
Use the sentence frame to say one vocabulary word in a complete oral sentence to a partner.
Show the three pictures again and ask students to name the word and tell what it means. End with a fast oral check.
Choral respond with the word and meaning, then listen for the closing signal.
End by saying all three words together and having students give a quick gesture for each word. Praise effort and remind students that new words help readers understand stories better.
During the quick review and turn-and-talk, observe whether each student can match the word to its meaning and use it orally in a simple sentence. Use the checks list for a fast teacher record of mastery.
Ask students to teach one vocabulary word to a family member and draw a picture of the word in action. They should bring the drawing back or tell the class about it the next day.
