Context Clues | Standard Lesson
Students will learn that context clues are words and pictures around an unknown word that help us figure out its meaning. Through read-alouds, guided practice, games, and partner talk, students will practice using context clues to make sense of unfamiliar vocabulary in simple texts.
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| context clues | Hints in the words and pictures around a word that help us understand it |
| clue | A hint that helps us figure something out |
| unknown word | A word we do not know yet |
| meaning | What a word means |
Show a hidden object or picture. Ask, 'How can we figure out what this is?' Introduce the idea that clues help us make smart guesses.
Look closely, share ideas, and name clues they notice.
Define context clues in kid-friendly language. Model with one sentence and picture: 'The puppy was wet after the rain.' Ask students which words and picture help them know wet means.
Repeat the definition, point to clues, and answer simple questions about the example.
Read a short picture book aloud. Pause at 3-4 target words. Think aloud to model: 'I see the picture, and the sentence says..., so I think the word means...'
Listen, point to clues in the text or picture, and turn and talk about possible meanings.
Place sentence strips and matching pictures in a pocket chart. Read each sentence and guide students to match the picture or act out the meaning of the bold word.
Work together to identify the clue, choose the matching picture, and say the meaning aloud.
Give pairs simple cards with one unknown word in a sentence and a picture. Circulate, prompt with questions, and support oral responses.
Use the sentence and picture to figure out the word, then share, 'I think ___ means ___. The clue is ___.''
Offer a harder set of cards with words that have multiple possible meanings but clear sentence clues. Encourage students to explain how they know.
Sort cards into 'I know' and 'I need more clues' and explain their thinking with support.
Review the definition of context clues and revisit one example from the lesson. Ask students to name one clue they used today.
State what context clues are and share one clue or strategy they used.
End by reminding students: 'Good readers use context clues to figure out unknown words.' Have the class repeat the definition and share one clue they noticed today.
Send home a simple context clue practice sheet with one sentence and picture. Students can tell a family member what the unknown word means and what clue helped them figure it out.
