Space | Project Based Learning
Students explore space by observing, sorting, building, and creating a class model of the Sun, Moon, stars, and planets. Through hands-on project work, students answer the guiding question: What do we see in space, and how can we show it?
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Space | The place outside Earth where the Sun, Moon, stars, and planets are found. |
| Sun | A big star that gives us light and heat. |
| Moon | The object we see in the sky at night that shines by reflecting light. |
| Star | A very far-away object in space that looks small to us. |
| Planet | A round object in space that travels around a star. |
| Observe | To look carefully and notice details. |
Show space pictures and ask, "What do you notice?" Record student ideas on chart paper using drawings and words.
Look closely, share observations, and name anything they recognize in the pictures.
Read a short space book or show labeled photos. Point out the Sun, Moon, stars, and planets. Repeat vocabulary with motions or gestures.
Echo vocabulary, point to the pictures, and respond to simple questions.
Explain the project: create a class space mural or model. Assign small groups jobs such as Sun makers, Moon makers, star makers, or planet makers.
Choose or accept a role and gather materials for their group.
Guide students as they glue, draw, cut, or place items on the mural/model. Ask prompting questions like, "Where should the stars go?" and "What color is the Moon?"
Work with partners or small groups to make space objects and add them to the class project.
Invite groups to explain what they made and where it belongs in space. Help students add missing details or labels.
Show their work, describe one part of the project, and listen to classmates.
Lead a quick review of the vocabulary and ask, "What did we learn about space today?" Support cleanup.
Help clean up and share one new fact or idea.
Gather students to view the finished space mural or model. Review the guiding question and have students complete the sentence: "In space, I see _____."
Send home a simple family task: look at the night sky with an adult, draw one thing you see, and bring the drawing back to share.
