Plants | Standard Lesson
Students will explore what plants need, identify basic plant parts, and observe how plants help people and animals. Through discussion, movement, sorting, drawing, and a simple hands-on observation, students will build early Earth science understanding about plants.

Show a plant or plant pictures. Ask students what they notice and guide them to share ideas about where they have seen plants.
Look, listen, and share prior knowledge about plants they know from home, school, or outside.
Point to the roots, stem, leaves, and flower on the real plant or picture. Say each part clearly and briefly describe its job.
Repeat the names of the plant parts and use fingers to point to each part on a picture or plant.
Lead a quick movement game: crouch for roots, stand tall for stem, spread arms for leaves, make a flower with hands overhead.
Move with the teacher and say each plant part aloud while acting it out.
Display pictures of sunlight, water, soil, and air. Help students identify that plants need water and sunlight to grow. Clarify that soil helps hold plants and air is around them.
Sort or point to the pictures of what plants need, and repeat the sentence: 'Plants need water and sunlight.'
Give students a plant or plant picture and a simple recording sheet. Model how to look closely and draw one or two details.
Observe the plant, draw what they see, and share one detail with a partner or the class.
Review plant parts, plant needs, and one way plants help us. Invite a few students to share their drawings or ideas.
Answer review questions, share observations, and participate in a final class discussion.
End with a quick review chant: 'Roots, stem, leaves, flower; plants need water and sunshine power!' Invite students to name one new thing they learned about plants.
At home, find one plant and draw it or tell a family member the names of two plant parts. Bring back one fact about how the plant helps people, animals, or the home.
