Life Cycles | Guided Practice
In this guided practice lesson, kindergarten students learn that living things grow and change through simple life cycles. Students will observe pictures, sort stages in order, and practice saying the steps of a butterfly and a plant life cycle with teacher support.
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| life cycle | The stages a living thing goes through as it grows and changes. |
| egg | A beginning stage for some animals. |
| caterpillar | A baby butterfly that eats and grows. |
| chrysalis | A resting stage where a caterpillar changes into a butterfly. |
| butterfly | An insect that starts as an egg and changes as it grows. |
| seed | A small part that can grow into a plant. |
| plant | A living thing that grows from a seed and needs water, light, and air. |
Show a plant or picture. Ask, 'Is this living? How do you know?' Guide students to notice that living things grow and change.
Share ideas, point to parts of the picture, and respond with simple words or gestures.
Explain that some living things go through steps called a life cycle. Use a simple butterfly example with picture cards: egg, caterpillar, chrysalis, butterfly. Say each stage aloud and have students repeat.
Repeat vocabulary, point to each picture, and mimic teacher-led motions for each stage.
Mix up the butterfly cards and invite students to help place them in order on the board. Ask guiding questions such as, 'What comes first?' and 'What changes next?' Repeat with a simple plant life cycle using seed, sprout, plant.
Work with the teacher to arrange cards, answer questions, and practice saying the order aloud.
Give each student or pair a sequencing strip with 3–4 pictures. Model how to glue them in order. Circulate and support students as needed.
Cut or move picture cards, glue them in order, and color the pictures if time allows.
Invite a few students to show their sequence. Review the words 'life cycle,' 'seed,' 'caterpillar,' 'chrysalis,' and 'butterfly.' Reinforce that living things grow and change.
Show work, name the stages, and repeat key vocabulary with the class.
Ask: 'What is one thing a living thing can do?' and 'What comes before a butterfly?' End with a simple summary: 'Living things grow and change in steps.'
Respond with one word or a short phrase and listen to the class summary.
Review that life cycles show how living things grow and change. Have students repeat the sentence, 'Living things grow and change in steps.'
