Government | Independent Practice
Students will create a simple collage that shows a helpful community place or person connected to government, such as a police officer, fire station, mayor, or city hall. This independent practice lesson helps students identify that government helps people in the community.
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| government | People and places that help make rules and keep our community safe and organized. |
| community helper | A person who helps other people in the community. |
| city hall | A building where people work for the city. |
| police officer | A person who helps keep people safe. |
| fire station | A place where firefighters stay and get ready to help. |
Show one simple example picture and name it: police officer, fire station, or city hall. Say, 'Government helps our community.' Explain that students will make their own picture of a helper or place.
Look at the example, listen, and choose one government-related idea to create.
Pass out materials and remind students to work quietly and on their own. Circulate to support cutting, gluing, and labeling if needed. Prompt students with questions like, 'Who helps people here?' or 'What place is this?'
Create a collage or drawing of one community helper or government building using paper shapes, crayons, and glue.
Ask a few students to hold up their work and name what they made. Give a quick clean-up signal and guide students to put away materials.
Share artwork if called on, clean up supplies, and return to the rug or seats.
Gather students and say: 'Government helps our community in many ways.' Have students point to their artwork and whisper the name of their helper or place.
