| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Context clues | Words, phrases, or sentences around an unfamiliar word that help reveal its meaning. |
| Unfamiliar word | A word that the reader does not know or understand. |

Write one sentence with a bold unfamiliar word. Ask students to guess the word’s meaning using the other words in the sentence.
Read the sentence and share a guess with a partner.
Define context clues and model how to find them in a sentence. Think aloud while showing how surrounding words can give hints about meaning.
Listen, underline clue words, and take brief notes.
Display 3 short sentences. Work through the first one together, then invite students to help with the next two. Ask what clue words helped them.
Identify clues, make meaning guesses, and explain their thinking aloud.
Give students 4 simple sentences or a short paragraph with 4 unfamiliar words. Circulate to support as needed.
Use context clues to infer meanings and write a short meaning for each word.
Review answers with the class and correct misunderstandings. Highlight how clues lead to meaning.
Share answers and compare thinking with the class.
Ask students to complete a quick oral or written statement: 'Context clues help me because...'.
Reflect on the strategy and respond in one sentence.
Reinforce that readers do not always need a dictionary immediately; context clues can often provide a strong first guess. End by asking students to name one thing they look for in the sentence to help them figure out a word.
Find three unfamiliar words in a book, article, or online text. For each word, write the sentence, underline the context clues, and guess the meaning based on those clues.
