Main Idea | Project Based Learning
Students will work in pairs to identify the main idea of short texts, sort supporting details, and use correct spelling to create a simple mini-poster that explains their thinking. The lesson uses a project-based format with a short product and quick share-out.

Display a short paragraph and two possible main ideas. Read the paragraph aloud and model how to choose the best main idea.
Listen, vote on the best main idea, and briefly explain their choice with a partner.
Teach the difference between topic, main idea, and supporting details. Model underlining details and writing a one-sentence main idea with correct spelling.
Take notes and help identify details from the model text.
Explain the project: each pair will read a short passage, write the main idea, list 3 supporting details, and create a mini-poster with correct spelling and neat labels.
Ask questions and receive materials.
Circulate, prompt students to reread, check spelling, and choose details that truly support the main idea.
Work in pairs to complete a detail sort and draft the poster.
Confer with pairs, checking for accurate main idea statements and correct spelling of key words.
Finish mini-posters, revise wording, and proofread spelling.
Invite a few pairs to present their poster and explain how they knew the main idea.
Present briefly and listen to classmates.
Review that the main idea is the big point and details support it. Praise careful spelling and clear thinking. Ask students to share one strategy they used to find the main idea.
Students will be assessed on a simple checklist: correct main idea, three accurate supporting details, clear mini-poster, and correct spelling of key words. Teacher observations and the final product will be used to determine understanding.
Find a short article, paragraph, or textbook section at home. Write one sentence stating the main idea and list three supporting details. Check the spelling of at least five important words from the text.
