Display one sentence with a highlighted unfamiliar word. Model thinking aloud: “I don’t know this word, but I can use the words around it to help me.”
Listen, then turn and say what clues they notice in the sentence.
Briefly explain context clues and model one example using synonym, definition, or example clues. Write the clue words on the board.
Track the example and underline clue words in the sentence.
Give small groups a short passage and sticky notes. Ask each group to identify 2–3 unknown words, highlight the clue words, and write a one-sentence meaning guess for each word.
Work together to find clue words, discuss possible meanings, and record their best guess on sticky notes or chart paper.
Invite 1–2 groups to share one word, their guessed meaning, and the clue that supported it. Confirm or refine responses as needed.
Present their thinking and listen to other groups’ ideas.
Ask students to complete a quick spoken or written response: “One clue I used today was...”
State or write one strategy they used to figure out a word meaning.
Review that strong readers do not stop at unknown words; they use nearby words to make a logical, text-based guess.
