Matter | Guided Practice
Students explore how matter relates to physical activity by observing how body position, force, and energy affect movement. In a short guided practice, they rotate through movement tasks and discuss how changes in matter (size, shape, mass, and state) influence performance and safety in PE.
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Matter | Anything that has mass and takes up space. |
| Mass | The amount of matter in an object or body. |
| Force | A push or pull that can change motion. |
| State | The form matter takes, such as solid, liquid, or gas. |
| Shape | The outline or form of an object or body position. |
Briefly explain that today’s focus is how matter affects movement in PE. Model one example, such as how body position changes balance and speed.
Listen, answer quick questions, and move to assigned space with equipment.
Guide students through 3 short stations: 1) body-shape changes during locomotor movement, 2) moving different equipment with varying mass, 3) applying controlled force to change direction or speed. Prompt students to notice what changes and why.
Complete each station, compare results, and respond to prompts using vocabulary words.
Ask pairs to discuss one example of how mass, force, or shape affected performance. Correct misconceptions and reinforce safe technique.
Share observations with a partner and use one vocabulary term in a sentence.
Review the main idea: matter has mass and takes up space, and its properties influence movement, control, and safety in physical activity. Invite one or two student responses.
State one thing learned and one way matter affected their movement.
Exit with a quick verbal recap: matter is anything with mass and volume, and in PE its properties affect how we move, control equipment, and stay safe.
