Display a short paragraph and ask students, "What is this mostly about?" Review the difference between topic and main idea using one quick example.
Read the paragraph, share responses, and explain why their answers fit or do not fit the text.
Model how to find the main idea by underlining repeated words, noting key details, and writing the main idea in one sentence.
Follow along, answer questions, and mark key words in the sample text.
Give students a short passage and lead the class in identifying the topic, main idea, and three supporting details.
Work with the teacher to highlight details and state the main idea aloud or in writing.
Have pairs complete a second passage using a main idea organizer. Circulate to support and prompt with questions such as, "Which detail is most important?"
Work with a partner to find the main idea and explain how details support it.
Provide a final short passage or question for students to answer on their own.
Write the main idea and one supporting detail independently.
Review answers as a class and clarify common mistakes, especially confusing topic with main idea.
Compare responses, ask questions, and correct misunderstandings.
Ask students to complete the statement: "A main idea is..." and share one strategy they will use on the next assessment. Briefly restate the difference between topic, main idea, and supporting details.
Complete one additional main idea practice passage or a short review worksheet, and write one sentence explaining how supporting details helped identify the main idea.
