Vocabulary | Independent Practice
Students will independently practice using vocabulary words accurately in sentences and short writing, showing understanding of meaning, context, and word choice.
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| context clue | A word, phrase, or sentence around an unfamiliar word that helps explain its meaning. |
| precise | Exact and specific; choosing the best word for the meaning. |

| synonym | A word that has the same or nearly the same meaning as another word. |
| tone | The feeling or attitude a writer creates through word choice. |
Display the vocabulary list and directions. Ask students to quietly write a brief definition or example for two words they already know.
Independently respond in notebooks and review the word list.
Briefly model how to use a context clue or dictionary entry to confirm a word's meaning, then show one example sentence.
Listen, follow along, and identify how the word is used correctly.
Direct students to complete a vocabulary practice set: match words to definitions or use context clues to choose the correct meaning.
Work independently to complete the task and check their responses against the word bank or reference tool.
Ask students to write one clear sentence for each target word, using the word accurately and in a way that shows meaning.
Write sentences independently, focusing on correct usage and clarity.
Provide 2-3 weak sentences and ask students to revise them using stronger vocabulary or more precise word choice.
Rewrite the sentences to improve word choice and meaning.
Invite volunteers to read one strong sentence or revision. Clarify any common errors.
Share responses and listen for accurate usage and strong word choice.
Students complete an exit response: choose one vocabulary word, define it in their own words, and use it correctly in a sentence.
Formative assessment based on independent practice responses, sentence accuracy, and the exit response. Use a simple rubric for correct meaning, correct usage, and clear writing.
