Reading Comprehension | Standard Lesson
Students will improve reading comprehension by using spelling patterns, prefixes, suffixes, and context clues to determine the meaning of unfamiliar words in a text. The lesson combines close reading, word study, and guided practice to support both decoding and comprehension.
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| prefix | A word part added to the beginning of a base word to change its meaning. |
| suffix | A word part added to the end of a base word to change its meaning or part of speech. |
| context clues | Hints in the surrounding text that help readers understand an unfamiliar word. |
| base word | A word that can stand alone and to which prefixes or suffixes can be added. |
| comprehension | Understanding what is read. |
Display 6–8 words from the passage and ask students to identify any prefixes, suffixes, or repeated spelling patterns.
Students quickly mark word parts and share observations aloud.
Model how to break apart one or two words from the passage, use spelling patterns, and connect them to meaning in context.
Students listen, annotate the modeled words, and copy the strategy into notebooks.
Read the passage aloud or have students read silently, pausing to highlight unfamiliar words and think aloud about clues in the text.
Students annotate the passage, underline unknown words, and circle clues that help them infer meaning.
Ask pairs to choose 3 unfamiliar words, identify their parts, write a predicted meaning, and verify with context or a reference tool.
Students work together to analyze words and discuss how each word affects understanding of the passage.
Provide a short comprehension question set that requires students to explain a word’s meaning and how it helped them understand the text.
Students complete the task independently and submit an exit ticket.
Review the strategy: identify the word parts, use the context, and confirm the meaning. Ask students to name one way spelling knowledge helped them understand the passage better.
Students will complete an exit ticket identifying one unfamiliar word, its word parts or spelling pattern, a predicted meaning, and a brief explanation of how it supported comprehension.
Read a short passage or article at home and identify five unfamiliar words. For each word, write the word parts, a guessed meaning, and the context clue that helped you decide.
