Solar System | Project Based Learning
Students will learn key facts about the solar system and create a simple movement-based project that shows the order of the planets, their relative distances, and basic motion patterns. The lesson combines physical education with science through teamwork, creativity, and active participation.
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Solar System | The Sun and all the objects that move around it, including planets, moons, and asteroids. |
| Planet | A large round object in space that moves around the Sun. |
| Orbit | The path a planet follows around the Sun. |
| Rotation | The spinning movement of a planet on its axis. |
| Revolution | The movement of a planet around the Sun. |
Lead a light cardio warm-up with stretches and simple movement drills. Introduce the lesson goal: learning the solar system through movement.
Follow the warm-up routine and listen to the lesson introduction.
Show planet cards and review the order of the planets from the Sun. Briefly explain orbit, rotation, and revolution using gestures and examples.
Repeat the planet names, answer questions, and practice the motions with the teacher.
Divide students into small groups and assign each group a focus, such as one or more planets, the Sun, or planet movement. Give clear directions for creating a short movement sequence.
Work together to plan a simple project using movement, spacing, and vocabulary.
Circulate, support groups, and check for accurate planet order and safe movement choices. Prompt groups to include one fact or action for their planet.
Practice their movement sequence, adjust based on feedback, and prepare a short presentation.
Invite each group to present. Ask audience members to identify the planet or movement being shown.
Perform their project and observe other groups respectfully.
Lead a slow cool down and group reflection. Review the main vocabulary and key facts from the lesson.
Participate in cool down stretches and share one thing they learned.
Review the order of the planets, the meaning of orbit, rotation, and revolution, and praise student teamwork. End by having students share one new fact or movement they learned.
Formative assessment will be based on teacher observation during planning, practice, and presentations using a simple checklist for accuracy, participation, teamwork, and vocabulary use.
Create a labeled solar system diagram or write 3–5 sentences about your favorite planet and one fact about its movement.
