Addition | Substitute Teacher
Students will practice adding numbers accurately and quickly through a movement-based relay game. The lesson combines physical activity, teamwork, and mental math for a challenging substitute-friendly class period.
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Addition | Combining two or more numbers to find a total. |
| Sum | The answer to an addition problem. |
| Strategy | A plan used to solve a problem efficiently. |
| Relay | A team activity where students take turns completing a task. |
| Accuracy | Getting the correct answer. |
Welcome students, review safety rules, and lead a brief dynamic warm-up with jogging, arm circles, high knees, and side shuffles. Explain that today’s PE challenge includes math tasks during movement.
Participate in the warm-up, listen to directions, and move safely in personal space.
Model the relay challenge. Show how each team member will run to a problem card, solve the addition problem, return, and record the answer. Review one or two sample problems together and remind students to estimate and check their work.
Watch, ask questions, and solve sample problems aloud with the class.
Divide students into balanced teams. Place problem cards at the far end of each lane. On signal, the first student runs to a card, reads the problem, solves it, returns, and records the answer. Continue until each team completes a set number of cards. Monitor safety, effort, and accuracy.
Take turns completing relay tasks, solve problems, and support teammates with encouragement.
Increase difficulty with larger numbers or two-step addition problems. Add a rule that teams must verify one answer before earning a point. Keep score for accuracy, not just speed.
Work together to complete harder problems and check answers before moving on.
Go over selected answers as a class. Ask students to explain a strategy they used to add quickly and correctly. Highlight teamwork, effort, and safe participation.
Share answers, compare strategies, and reflect on how movement affected focus.
End with a quick stretch and a class shout-out for strong teamwork and accurate math. Remind students that careful checking helps both in PE challenges and in everyday problem solving.
Formative assessment will be based on teacher observation, team recording sheets, and student explanations during the review. Accuracy, participation, and safe movement will be used to gauge mastery of the addition skill.
