Vocabulary | Small Group
Students work in small groups to learn, practice, and use academic and everyday vocabulary accurately in speaking and writing. The lesson focuses on word meanings, context clues, synonyms, antonyms, and choosing precise words in sentences.
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Vocabulary | Words and phrases a person knows and uses. |
| Context clues | Hints in a sentence or passage that help determine a word's meaning. |
| Synonym | A word that means nearly the same as another word. |
| Antonym | A word that means the opposite of another word. |
| Precise | Exact and specific. |
Display 6 to 8 familiar words and ask students to sort them into groups, such as positive, negative, or neutral. Model one example.
In small groups, discuss the words and complete the sort. Share one group choice with the class.
Teach the meaning of vocabulary, context clues, synonym, antonym, and precise. Model how to use a sentence to figure out a word's meaning.
Listen, repeat key terms, and copy simple examples in notebooks.
Give each group 3 short sentences with an unfamiliar word highlighted. Model the first one, then guide groups to use nearby clues to infer meaning.
Work together to infer meanings and explain how the clues helped.
Provide word cards with target vocabulary, synonyms, antonyms, and sentence stems. Ask groups to match cards and create one original sentence for each target word.
Match words with meanings or related words, then write and read sentences aloud within the group.
Invite each group to share one sentence and one word meaning. Correct gently and reinforce accurate usage.
Present one example from the group and listen to other groups.
Ask quick oral review questions: What is a synonym? What are context clues? Which word is more precise?
Answer as a group or individually and complete the exit review verbally.
Review the key idea that strong vocabulary helps students speak and write more clearly. End by having each group say one new word and use it in a sentence.
