Supporting Details | Review Lesson
Students will review how supporting details strengthen a main idea in a paragraph or short text. Through guided practice, partner work, and a quick exit assessment, students will identify, explain, and choose relevant details that support a central idea.
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Main idea | The most important point or message in a text. |
| Supporting detail | A fact, example, or explanation that gives more information about the main idea. |
| Relevant | Closely connected to the main idea and helpful to the reader. |
| Irrelevant | Not related to the main idea. |
Display a short paragraph and ask students to underline the sentence they think states the main idea.
Individually read the paragraph and identify the main idea sentence.
Briefly review main idea and supporting details. Model how to ask, 'Does this detail explain, prove, or clarify the main idea?' Use one example paragraph and think aloud.
Listen, take notes, and answer questions during the modeling.
Read a second short paragraph aloud. Ask the class to identify the main idea and point out 2-3 supporting details. Confirm or correct responses as needed.
Share answers, highlight supporting details, and explain their thinking.
Give pairs a short passage with several details. Ask them to sort the details into 'supports the main idea' or 'does not support the main idea.'
Work with a partner to sort details and discuss reasons for each choice.
Provide one brief paragraph with a main idea and four details. Students choose the two best supporting details.
Complete the task independently.
Collect exit tickets, then quickly review the correct answers and restate the key idea: good supporting details stay focused on the main idea.
Submit the exit ticket and listen to the wrap-up.
Ask students to finish the sentence: 'A strong supporting detail is important because ___. ' Reinforce that supporting details make the main idea clearer and stronger.
Students will complete an exit ticket in which they identify the main idea and select the best supporting details from a short paragraph.
