Inference | Guided Practice
Students will learn how to make simple inferences by combining clues from a text with their own background knowledge. Through guided practice, they will identify clues, explain their thinking, and write short responses that show understanding.
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Inference | A guess you make using clues from the text and what you already know. |
| Clue | A word or detail in the text that helps you understand meaning. |
| Background knowledge | What you already know from your experiences or learning. |
| Evidence | Details from the text that support your answer. |
Display a simple picture or short paragraph. Model noticing clues and thinking aloud: 'I see..., so I infer...'
Share observations and make one quick guess based on clues.
Explain that an inference is a smart guess made from clues plus background knowledge. Record a simple anchor chart with the formula: Clues + What I Know = Inference.
Copy the formula and repeat the definition with the class.
Read a short passage aloud. Ask guiding questions: What clues do you notice? What do you already know? What can you infer? Model one response before releasing to students.
Underline clues, discuss answers with a partner, and complete inference statements using sentence stems.
Provide 2 to 3 short practice items. Circulate, prompt students to include evidence, and restate incomplete answers.
Work with a partner to write one inference for each item and list at least one clue that supports it.
Ask students to choose one prompt and write 3 to 4 sentences explaining their inference using clues from the text.
Write a short response that includes the inference, clue(s), and reasoning.
Invite a few volunteers to share one inference and one clue. Reinforce correct use of evidence and reasoning.
Listen, compare answers, and ask questions if needed.
Review the formula Clues + What I Know = Inference. Ask students to say one thing they learned about making inferences and one clue they used today.
Find a short paragraph, comic strip, or advertisement at home. Write one inference and list two clues that helped you make it.
