Matter | Mini Lesson
Students will learn that matter is anything that has mass and takes up space. They will identify the three common states of matter, describe simple properties, and observe how matter can change from one state to another.
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Matter | Anything that has mass and takes up space. |
| Solid | A state of matter with a definite shape and definite volume. |
| Liquid | A state of matter with a definite volume but no definite shape. |
| Gas | A state of matter with no definite shape or definite volume. |
| Volume | The amount of space something takes up. |
Show an ice cube, a cup of water, and a balloon. Ask: What do these have in common? Introduce matter as anything that has mass and takes up space.
Share ideas, observe the examples, and repeat the definition of matter.
Briefly explain the three states of matter using the examples. Point out that solids keep their shape, liquids take the shape of their container, and gases spread out to fill space.
Listen, take notes, and answer quick questions about each state.
Ask students to sort several quick examples aloud: desk, juice, air, pencil, steam. Write responses on the board and correct as needed.
Classify each example as solid, liquid, or gas and explain why.
Have students turn and talk: What change happens when ice melts? What happens when water becomes steam?
Discuss state changes with a partner and share one response with the class.
Ask students to complete a one-sentence response: 'Matter is...' and name one example of a solid, liquid, or gas.
Write a quick response to show understanding.
Review the main idea: matter is anything that has mass and takes up space, and it can be a solid, liquid, or gas. Ask students to name one thing they learned before ending the lesson.
Use the exit check and guided practice responses to assess whether students can define matter and identify examples of solids, liquids, and gases.
At home, find three examples of matter: one solid, one liquid, and one gas. Write each item and explain why it fits that category.
