Inference | Mini Lesson
Students use inference skills to figure out the spelling of unfamiliar or tricky words by using context clues, word parts, and sound-pattern reasoning. This advanced mini-lesson focuses on helping students make smart spelling decisions when they are unsure of a word.
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Inference | A careful guess made using clues and what you already know. |
| Context clues | Words or ideas around an unfamiliar word that help you understand it. |
| Word pattern | A repeated spelling structure that helps you spell words correctly. |
| Prefix | A word part added to the beginning of a word. |
| Suffix | A word part added to the end of a word. |
| Root word | The main part of a word that gives it meaning. |
Display one sentence with a challenging word missing or misspelled, such as: 'The detective made a careful ___ based on the clues.' Ask students what word belongs and how they know.
Students think, then share possible answers and explain what clues helped them.
Model a quick think-aloud. Choose an unfamiliar word and show how to use context, word parts, and spelling patterns to infer the correct spelling. Example: 'decision' vs. 'decison'—identify the base and common pattern. Emphasize that strong spellers do not just guess; they infer.
Students listen, annotate key spelling clues, and repeat the strategy aloud with the teacher.
Present 3-4 advanced words in sentences. For each, ask students to infer the spelling and justify it. Prompt them to look for prefixes, suffixes, roots, and familiar patterns. Correct misunderstandings as a group.
Students write the word, underline clues, and explain their choices to a partner or aloud.
Give 2 final words or sentences for students to solve independently. Circulate and support as needed.
Students independently infer spelling and briefly write why they chose that spelling.
Review the three-step process: read the sentence, look for word parts and patterns, and use clues to make a smart spelling decision.
Students repeat the strategy and share one word they can now spell more confidently.
End by reminding students that inference is a spelling tool: good spellers use context, patterns, and word parts to make accurate decisions when a word is unfamiliar.
