Inference | Small Group
Students will learn how to make logical inferences by using text clues and prior knowledge. In small groups, they will practice explaining what a text suggests without stating it directly.
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Inference | A conclusion a reader makes using text clues and what they already know. |
| Text evidence | Words or details from the passage that support an answer. |
| Prior knowledge | What a reader already knows about a topic or situation. |
| Clue | A detail in the text that helps the reader figure something out. |
Display a short sentence or image and model one simple inference aloud. Explain that readers infer when authors do not tell everything directly.
Share one idea about what they think is happening and why.
Read a short passage aloud and think aloud to model identifying clues, combining them with prior knowledge, and stating an inference. Write a simple sentence frame: 'I infer ___ because the text says ___ and I know ___.'.
Follow along, highlight clues, and repeat the sentence frame with the teacher.
Work with small groups to answer 2-3 inference questions. Prompt students to point to specific words or details in the passage and explain their thinking.
Discuss answers with the group, highlight evidence, and complete inference responses using the sentence frame.
Give students a short second passage or set of question cards. Circulate to support and check for understanding.
Individually write one inference for each question and include at least one text clue.
Invite a few students to share an inference and the clues that supported it. Clarify any misconceptions between literal and inferred meaning.
Listen, compare answers, and revise responses if needed.
Review the key idea: good readers do not just read what the text says; they use clues and what they know to figure out what the text suggests.
Exit ticket: Students write one inference from a short prompt and include one text clue and one piece of prior knowledge that support it.
Read a short assigned passage or book page and write one inference with two clues from the text.
