Government | Project Based Learning
Students work in small groups to design a simple government for a new classroom or island community. Through research, discussion, and decision-making, they learn the purposes of government, different types of government, and how power and rules help societies function.

Present a scenario: a new island has 30 families who need rules, leaders, and ways to make decisions. Ask, 'What problems would happen without government?' Record student ideas.
Think-pair-share and contribute ideas about safety, fairness, order, and conflict.
Briefly explain the purpose of government and introduce democracy, monarchy, and dictatorship with simple examples.
Take notes and ask clarifying questions.
Explain the task: groups will create a government for the new island or classroom community. Review project criteria: name, type of government, leaders/roles, 3 laws, and how citizens participate.
Form groups, read directions, and assign roles such as recorder, speaker, timekeeper, and materials manager.
Circulate, prompt thinking with questions, and provide support with vocabulary and examples.
Use resources to compare government types and choose a structure for their community. Complete a planning organizer.
Guide groups as they make a poster or one-page design showing their government system.
Create a clear visual product with labels, laws, roles, and a short justification for choices.
Invite a few groups to present one key decision and explain why they chose it.
Listen respectfully and give one positive comment or question to another group.
End with a brief class discussion: Which features of government help a community stay fair and organized? Students complete a quick verbal or written reflection naming one thing they learned.
