Geometry | Standard Lesson
In this 15-minute Grade 7 foreign language lesson, students practice geometry vocabulary in the target language by identifying, describing, and comparing shapes and angles. The lesson is challenging but accessible through visual supports, sentence frames, and quick partner talk.
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| shape | A figure with a specific form, such as a triangle or square. |
| side | A straight edge of a shape. |
| corner/vertex | A point where two sides meet. |
| angle | The space between two lines or sides that meet. |
| right angle | An angle that forms an L shape, like the corner of a square. |
| triangle | A shape with three sides and three corners. |
| square | A shape with four equal sides and four right angles. |
| rectangle | A shape with four sides and four right angles, with opposite sides equal. |
Show 3-4 shape images. Say each shape name in the target language and model pronunciation. Ask students to repeat chorally.
Repeat the vocabulary and point to matching shapes.
Model one or two simple target-language sentences, such as 'It has three sides' and 'It has four right angles.' Write sentence frames on the board. Highlight key vocabulary.
Listen, repeat, and notice how the teacher uses number words and geometry terms to describe shapes.
Give pairs a shape card. Prompt them with a frame such as 'It is a ____. It has ____ sides/corners.' Circulate, correct pronunciation, and support with gestures.
Work with a partner to name the shape and describe its sides, corners, and angles using the sentence frames.
Display two shapes and ask: 'Which has more sides?' or 'Which has right angles?' Encourage students to answer in the target language with a comparison phrase.
Compare the two shapes orally or on paper using the vocabulary and sentence frames.
Show one final shape and ask students to say or write one accurate description in the target language.
Individually produce one short descriptive sentence before leaving.
Review the key geometry words once more and praise accurate target-language descriptions. Remind students that shapes can be identified by their sides, corners, and angles.
Choose three objects at home that are geometric shapes and write one sentence in the target language describing each object.
