Solar System | Small Group
In this 15-minute small-group lesson, students learn the basic structure of the solar system and identify the Sun, planets, and a few key features of space. The lesson is simple, visual, and discussion-based.
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Solar System | The Sun and all the objects that move around it, including planets, moons, and asteroids. |
| Planet | A large round object in space that orbits the Sun. |
| Orbit | The path an object follows as it moves around another object in space. |
| Sun | The star at the center of our solar system. |
| Moon | A natural object that orbits a planet. |
Show a solar system image and ask: 'What do you notice in this picture?' Briefly introduce the topic.
Look closely at the image and share one observation with the group.
Point to the Sun and planets on the diagram. Name the planets in order: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune. Explain that all of them orbit the Sun.
Repeat planet names with the teacher and follow along on the diagram.
Give students planet cards or labels and ask them to place the planets in the correct order from the Sun. Support as needed.
Work together to sequence the planets and check the order with the teacher.
Ask simple questions: 'Which planet is closest to the Sun?' 'What does orbit mean?' 'Is the Moon a planet?'
Answer questions using vocabulary words and discuss ideas with partners.
Review the key points: Sun, planets, orbit, and the solar system. Correct any errors and restate important ideas clearly.
Say one fact they learned and listen to the final review.
End by having each student say one thing they learned about the solar system. Thank the group and remind them that the planets orbit the Sun.
