Vocabulary | Centers
Students rotate through short, structured centers to practice using new vocabulary in context, analyzing word meaning, and applying words in their own writing. The lesson supports speaking, reading, and writing with repeated exposure to target words.

Introduce the focus vocabulary and model how to use one word in a sentence. Briefly review context clues, root words, prefixes, and suffixes.
Listen, repeat key words, and write one quick example sentence with a partner.
Provide short passages with target words removed or highlighted. Model one example, then circulate and prompt students to explain how they found each meaning.
Read passages, infer meanings, and match words to definitions or sentences on the recording sheet.
Set out root words, prefixes, and suffixes. Show how parts combine to build meaning.
Build words from cards, identify the root, prefix, and/or suffix, and record what each part contributes to meaning.
Explain the task and model one match. Encourage students to justify their choices using precise language.
Match target vocabulary words to synonyms and antonyms, then write a sentence showing the difference between two related words.
Display a writing prompt connected to content or a familiar topic. Support students in selecting strong words and revising weak word choices.
Write a short paragraph using at least four target words correctly in context.
Work with a small group to reteach difficult words, check understanding, and provide oral practice and feedback.
Discuss word meanings, answer quick oral questions, and practice using vocabulary in spoken sentences.
Bring the class together and ask students to name one new word, one strategy they used to learn it, and one sentence that shows correct use of the word. Reinforce that strong vocabulary improves both reading and writing.
