Counting | Review Lesson
Students will review and practice counting accurately using place value, skip counting, and counting on/back with whole numbers. The lesson is designed as a quick, interactive review to strengthen speed, accuracy, and confidence.
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| counting on | Starting at a number and moving forward to find the next numbers. |
| skip counting | Counting by numbers other than 1, such as 2s, 5s, 10s, or 100s. |
| place value | The value of a digit based on its position in a number. |
| sequence | A set of numbers arranged in order. |
| pattern | A rule that repeats in a list of numbers. |
Lead the class in counting forward by 1s from 48, then backward from 25. Ask students to listen for errors and repeat the sequence aloud.
Chorally count, listen carefully, and correct any mistakes.
Display a number line or hundred chart. Model counting by 2s, 5s, 10s, and 100s from different starting points. Ask quick response questions.
Respond orally and point to numbers on the chart or number line.
Write three numbers on the board, such as 37, 126, and 509. Ask students to count on 3, 5, or 10 more and then count back 2 or 4.
Work with a partner or independently on whiteboards to show answers and explain thinking.
Present short counting sequences with one mistake, such as 14, 16, 18, 20, 21, 24. Invite students to identify and correct the error.
Spot errors, explain the correct pattern, and share answers with the class.
Ask students to name one counting strategy they used today and one number pattern they can count confidently.
Share a brief oral response or write a quick sentence.
Review the key idea that counting follows a pattern. Remind students that using a number line, place value, and skip counting can help them count accurately and quickly.
Practice counting forward and backward by 1s, 2s, 5s, and 10s for five minutes. Write one counting sequence of your choice and underline the pattern.
