Story Elements | Review Lesson
Students review key story elements through a health-themed story. They identify characters, setting, problem, events, and solution while connecting the story to healthy choices and safe behaviors. This is a simple review lesson for Grade 6.
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Character | A person or animal in a story. |
| Setting | Where and when a story happens. |
| Problem | The challenge or conflict in a story. |
| Events | Important actions that happen in the story. |
| Solution | How the problem is solved. |
| Message | What the reader learns from the story. |
Ask students to name story elements they already know. Record responses on the board and briefly review each one.
Share ideas, listen to the review, and give examples from familiar stories.
Read a short health-themed story aloud. Pause at key points to model thinking about characters, setting, and the main problem.
Listen, follow along, and note important details.
Use a graphic organizer to guide the class in identifying the story elements together. Ask targeted questions about the problem, events, and solution.
Help complete the organizer and respond to questions using story evidence.
Have pairs retell the story using the vocabulary terms. Circulate and support students who need help.
Work with a partner to explain the story elements in order.
Ask students to write one sentence naming the character, problem, and solution from the story.
Write a short response independently.
Review answers with the class and reinforce how story elements help readers understand health messages.
Share one thing they learned and listen to the summary.
End by asking students to share one story element and one health message from the story. Reinforce that understanding story elements helps readers better understand important ideas.
Ask students to choose a favorite story at home and write the character, setting, problem, and solution in four short sentences.
